Managing Stress Without Drugs

Health Perth, WA, Australia – Stress is endemic in our society. Research shows that 70% of Australians feel that stress is having a negative impact on their physical and mental health, a figure confirmed by the experiences of team members at The Perth Brain Centre who see many patients suffering from the effects of stress. Heart Rate Variability Therapy , used at The Perth Brain Centre, was one of the methods proven to be effective in reducing stress that was highlighted in a recent, randomized, controlled trial conducted in the Netherlands in 2015*. The trial compared three randomly assigned interventions that people could use to help themselves with stress reduction. These were Physical Activity, Mindfulness Meditation and Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback. Results showed clearly that all three methods can significantly reduce stress and its associated symptoms.

All interventions resulted in a substantial and statistically significant effect on levels of anxiety, depression, perceived stress and overall psychological well-being as well as improving people’s sleep. For those suffering from the effects of stress, any of these three safe, drug free interventions are beneficial. However, mindfulness meditation may be a technique that proves harder for some to learn and committing to physical activity may not be possible because of other health constraints. By contrast, Heart Rate Variability training is easy to learn by everyone, whether young or old. In just a few short sessions using a small heart rate sensor attached to an earlobe or fingertip, anyone can learn to control his or her stress responses. Heart Rate Variability therapy is available at Perth Brain Centre.

Heartmath HRV Biofeedback provides a simple and effective way for patients to begin taking control of their responses to stress in just a few sessions of therapy at the Centre, consolidated with some regular practice at home. This scientifically validated stress-reduction program has already helped more than a million people in over one hundred countries across the globe and is used in hospitals, clinics, workplaces and schools.
